VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison, KS became part of VanArsdale Funeral Services in January of 2010. Located right down Main St., it is one of many businesses that call Madison home. It was truly a special opportunity that brought the funeral home to the VanArsdale family. Although Mike grew up in Lebo, he has countless family members that call Madison and the surrounding areas home.
Like many other small town funeral homes, there is a long line of families that, over the decades, have provided funeral service inside the very same walls that VanArsdale Funeral Home does today. However, the original use of the building varied in its beginning. Built in 1922 by Will Soule, it served as a restaurant. The next owner kept the restaurant under and new name and opened boarding rooms upstairs. In 1925, the building was sold to Mrs. Evar Johnson, and after a little remodeling, she continued using the building as a boarding house. From 1935 – 1943, ownership and use of the building continued to change, mainly being a barber shop and several beauty parlors downstairs while upstairs rooms continued to be rented.
A funeral home was first operated out of the building in 1943, when M.P. Cook relocated his funeral home to the site. From that point on it has been the location of Madison, KS’s funeral homes. Cook remodeled the building and added on to the west side, acquiring the old city jail that was built in the 1920’s. With this remodel, the funeral home could operate all on one level and prior accessibility issues had been solved. The building layout remains the same today.
In years since, the funeral home has been known as Sexton Funeral Home, Sexton-Perrill Funeral Home, and in 1973, Wilson Funeral Home, owned and operated by Tom and Linda Wilson of Madison. It was from the Wilsons that Mike and Sheri acquired the business, and today, VanArsdale Funeral Home continues to serve the families of Madison and the areas surrounding.
