Winifred E. Beck, 86, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Newman Hospital in Emporia, Kansas. She was born February 19, 1928 in Manhattan, Kansas the daughter of George F. and Alice O. Griffiee Taylor. Winifred attended Manhattan High School and graduated as a member of the Class of 1946. She lived most of her life in Manhattan until moving to Junction City in 2008 to be near her daughter. Winifred worked many years in food service for the USD 383 schools. She was married to Jack E. Murphy on April 6, 1947 in Manhattan. He preceded her in death in 1965. She married Fred "Gene" Beck on November 5, 1977 in Manhattan. He preceded her in death on September 12, 2005. She will be lovingly missed by her daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie" Murphy of Miller, Kansas; five sons, John Michael Murphy of Wamego, Raymond Murphy of Wabaunsee, Danny Murphy and his wife Jane of Taos, New Mexico, James Murphy of Santa Barbara, California and Patrick Murphy of Miller; a step son, Chris Beck of Kingsville, Missouri; step daughter, Rhonda Carver and her husband Dave of Kingsville, Missouri; three sisters, Barbara Metz and her husband Herb of Atlanta, Georgia, Betty Doupnik of Lumas, California and Susie Lundsford and her husband Ed of Oak Grove, Missouri; two brothers, DeWayne Taylor and his wife Kay of Manhattan and Tom Taylor of Miller; eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; Her baseball watching friend Mickey Nyman of Junction City. She was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Charlotte Taylor; brother-in-law, Gary Doupnik and daughter-in-law Coleene Murphy. Winifred was a member of the American Legion Auxillary for over 50 years. Cremation is planned and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
