Sheila Marie Rhoades, 67, of Emporia, KS, passed away peacefully at her home on October 1, 2024, while in hospice care.

Sheila was born July 20, 1957 in Emporia, KS, the daughter of Ralph and Helen (Boyce) Thill. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1975, marking a significant milestone as part of the first class to graduate from the new high school building. Her education continued at Flint Hills Technical College, where she honed her office and secretary skills, laying the groundwork for her varied and impactful career.

Sheila's professional journey began at Josten's Year Book Company and later took her to the Kansas Capitol Building, where she served in the Tax Return Department for the Department of Revenue. Her skill as a typist led to a role at Daniels Construction, where she typed and put together building procedures for the engineers completing construction of the Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant in Coffey County. Over the years, Sheila held various positions, including serving as a secretary for the Law Department of I.B.P. in Emporia, and running a home day care service. Her dedication and commitment were evident during her 15-year tenure in inventory at Staples in Emporia, which began during the building process of the store.

Outside of work, Sheila found great joy in reading, enjoyed completing puzzles, and created beautiful cross-stitch projects. Sheila also cherished her time by the pool.

Sheila's legacy will continue through her loving family, including her husband of 38 years, Richard F. Rhoades; her son, Derek R. Rhoades; sisters, Sharon Gaede (Fred), Sandra Laird (Jim), and Shirley Jones (Casey); and brother, Greg Thill (Becky). She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Helen Thill.

The celebration of Sheila's life will take place on October 21, 2024, at the Clint Bowyer Building in Emporia, Kansas. Friends and family are invited to gather at 11:00 AM to honor and remember her life. Memorials may be made to the Emporia Animal Shelter and sent c/o Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home, PO Box 43, Lebo, KS 66856.
