Nona Maurine Adams, 93, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas.
Maurine was born December 22, 1923 in Manhattan, Kansas. She was the daughter of Albert Edward and Mary Lee (Turner) Waterstradt. She graduated from Chapman High School in 1941. She earned a degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas in 1945 and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Emporia State University in 1972.
She was joined in marriage to Paul D. Adams on June 24, 1945 in Lawrence, Kansas. To this union three daughters were born: Carol, Gwen and Susan. Paul preceded her in death on January 19, 1999. She was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Maurine was a mother and housewife, and later served for twenty years as the librarian of Osage City High School. She was a member of the Osage City United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Sorosis Club. Maurine was an avid KU Jayhawk; she served a term on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Union, and she was given the Mildred Clodfelter award in 1989 by the KU Alumni Association for her extensive support of the Kansas Honors Program in Osage and surrounding counties of Kansas. After retiring from teaching, she also served on the Board of the Northeast Kansas Library Association.
Maurine will be forever remembered by her three daughters, Carol Ann (Clifton) Brown, of Alexandria, Virginia, Gwen Adams of St. Louis, Missouri and Dr. Susan Adams of St. Louis, Missouri; a sister, Joan Zingaro, of College Station, Texas, and two grandchildren, Jennifer Laaser, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and William Laaser, of Sri Racha, Thailand.
A funeral service for Maurine will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, September 16 at the First United Methodist Church in Osage City. The family will receive friends for an hour before the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Osage City Library or the Osage City Methodist Church. Condolences may be expressed at vanarsdalefs.com.
