Mildred J. Milburn

Mildred “Milly” Jeanette (Torkelson) Milburn, 93, passed away on January 1, 2022, at Sunset Manor in Waverly, Kansas.

Milly was born on August 27, 1928, in Horton, Kansas to parents, Jacob and Jenny (Olson) Torkelson. She spent her childhood growing up on the family farm. In 1946, Milly graduated from ACCHS in Effingham, Kansas. After high school, Milly taught for one year at a one room school house. She met the love of her life, Ted Milburn, while at the grocery store he worked at. The two were married on July 2, 1950. In 2020, the two celebrated 70 years together.

She and Ted lived in Kansas City while he worked at Safeway. The family moved to Waverly in 1963, where Milly and Ted worked side by side in their store, the “Waverly Food Mart.” Along with raising their three children, Milly taught Sunday school, helped with Harvesters, and volunteered in many other community activities. After selling the grocery store, Milly went to work at the First National Bank of Kansas, off and on, until 2015.

Preceding Milly in death, is her husband, Ted Milburn; both parents, Jacob and Jenny Torkelson; sister, Emma Galbraith, and brother Roy Torkelson.

Milly was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. This love is carried on in the hearts of her two daughters, Patti Collins and Marilyn (Bob) Huggard; son, Dan Milburn; sister, Joyce Ann Richling; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
