Micheal Allen Watkins

July 30, 1950 — December 24, 2024

Hartford

Micheal Allen Watkins, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, at the age of 74. Mike was born July 30, 1950 and raised in Illinois, but he made his home in Hartford, Kansas, where he spent the majority of his life, deeply committed to his family, his community, and his faith.

Above all, Mike was devoted to his family. He shared a powerful and enduring love with his wife Colleen for 55 years. Their partnership was the foundation of a warm and loving home, and Mike’s belief that “love could conquer all” was evident in the way he lived his life. He took great pride in creating and upholding family traditions, especially at Christmas, a season he cherished. It is only fitting that he passed away on Christmas Eve, surrounded by the love he had so freely given throughout his life.

For many years, Coach Mike was the heart and soul of the Lady Nets basketball team, where he served as founder, head coach, mentor, and friend to countless young athletes. His passion for the game was only rivaled by his devotion to teaching young people the four C’s character, competitiveness, confidence and competence as well as the values of teamwork, integrity and personal growth. Mike’s love for sports extended to his own children, all of whom were talented athletes themselves. Whether at the gym, on the field, or in the stands, he was always cheering on his family and others in their pursuits.

Mike’s contributions extended beyond his family and personal interests. He dedicated much of his life to helping young people become better individuals, founding and leading the Athletic Christian Team at Hartford Middle and High School. His guidance, support, and unwavering faith made a lasting impact on generations of students who carried his lessons with them throughout their lives.

Outside of his work with young athletes, Mike had a deep appreciation for antiques and enjoyed spending his free time attending auctions, often with his wife or one of his children by his side. His love for collecting was just one of many ways he found joy in life's simple pleasures.

Mike (aka Paw Paw, Pappy, Pops) was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Betty Watkins. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Colleen, and his brothers, Elbe (Susan) Watkins, Stan (Sue) Watkins, Kevin Watkins, Jeff (Leslie) Watkins, his children Brandon (Bridget) Watkins, Wendee (Jeff) Brungardt, Ryan (Tara) Watkins, Mindy Watkins, Jodi (John) VanGundy, and his 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, all who were the light of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service to others that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Mike was known for his big heart, his “Can’t Never Did Anything” attitude and the love he freely gave to those around him, usually with a big hug and kiss. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the lives he touched, the lessons he imparted, and the family traditions that will endure.
