Melvin Roy Sherman

Melvin Roy Sherman, 65 of Hamilton, passed away Saturday August 31, 2019 at the Eureka Nursing Center. He was born October 17, 1953 in Eureka, Kansas the son of Melvin Retsel and Lola Jean Crabtree Sherman. Melvin attended Hamilton High School and graduated with the Class of 1972. He would attend courses at Flint Hills Vocational Technical College where he earned certification from the Auto Mechanic Division.  After receiving his education, Melvin began working with his father in the family  business, “Oil Patch Well Service”.  They would serve the Greenwood County and surrounding area for several years until the early 1990’s.  Melvin’s heart always remained in the oil patch. He took up the job of pumper on the Ellis Lease NW of Hamilton. He continued as a pumper until his retirement in 2016. Melvin married Laurel Hall on September 15, 1974 in Toronto. Together they raised a son Clint and a daughter Cindy.  Melvin and Laurel later divorced in June of 2000.   Melvin had a strong bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He cherished the time he spent with them and going to their various activities.   He will live on in the hearts of his son, Clint, Sherman and his wife Keila of Hamilton; a daughter, Cindy Brown of Eureka; grandchildren, Bridget, Eli and Katie and his great-grandchildren, Ryder and Raelynn.; numerous extended family and a host of lifelong friends. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Betty Key, Dianna “Short” Castle and Becky Linden; and a brother, Gerald Sherman.  Cremation is planned with graveside services being held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Janesville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hamilton City Library and sent in care of the VanArsdale Funeral Home at P.O. Box #488, Madison, Kansas 66860.
