Lois E. Wernli, 99 passed away Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons where she had been living since 2006.
She was born September 3, 1916 in Burlington, Kansas, the daughter of John L. and Margaret J. Sinclair Kerby.
Lois attended school in Burlington and later graduated from Madison High School. As a young woman Lois worked at the telephone company in Madison.
She was joined in marriage to H.C. “Shorty” Wernli on March 8, 1943 in Emporia. The young couple made their home in Madison before moving to El Dorado. While in El Dorado she worked at the McDonalds dry goods store. After losing their home in a tornado in 1958 they moved to Attica where they would spend the next 15 years. She worked at Keith’s Hardware Store while in Attica. Lois and Shorty later spent two years in Ada, Oklahoma before moving to Altamont in 1974 to be closer to their daughter. While in Altamont she worked at the Hart Hardware. They enjoyed over forty years together until Shorty’s death on June 3, 1985.
Lois was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Parsons.
Lois will remain in the hearts of her daughter, Carole Nicholas and husband David of Altamont; two grandchildren, Kevin Nicholas of New Orleans, Louisiana and Denise Ozier and husband James of Altamont; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Nicholas and wife Chelsea of Lexington, Kentucky, Morgan Nicholas of Lexington, Kentucky, Nicholas McCroy and wife Bethany of Joplin, Missouri and Michaela Ozier of Altamont, Kansas; one great-great grandchild, Jeremiah McCroy; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
Lois was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Kerby and two sisters, Maxine Ratcliff and Ileene Stevenson.
