Leo Lewis Lord, 92, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017 at his home in Madison.
He was born April 6, 1925 in Kingman , Kansas the son of Albert and Edna Huddle Lord.
Leo attended Kingman High School and graduated with the Class of 1943. He joined the United States Army on March 19, 1945 and served in the Pacific Theatre, spending one year and one day on Okinawa. He was honorably discharged on December 2, 1946.
Leo returned to Kingman where he worked as a lineman. In the late 1940's he moved to Madison to work for the City Service. This move changed his life forever. He would soon meet the love of his life, Bethene Alexander. They were joined in marriage on October 10, 1952 in Madison. Leo went on to own and operated the Allis Chalmers Dealership in Madison. He later worked as a mechanic at Mouse Motors and was employed during the construction and later the maintenance of the I.B.P. plant in Emporia. He retired at age 57 and became the "Madison Fix It Man." For decades, he enjoyed helping the area farmers with any and all mechanical difficulties.
Leo was an active in the Central Christian Church, the Madison American Legion and the Madison community as a whole.
He will live on in the hearts of his loving wife of sixty-four years, Bethene Lord of their home; daughters, Becky Shearburn and her husband Tony of Columbus, Kansas, Jeanette Lawrence and her husband Larry of Monument, Colorado and Alesia Barb and her husband Dale of Hamilton; son Eric Lord of Madison; nine grandchildren, Jessica LaForge and her husband Jordan, Joshua Holeman, Joel Holeman, Troy Lawrence, David Lawrence, Heather Horst and her husband Lukas, Adam Hamilton and his wife Krysta, Donovan Hamilton and his wife Emily and Caleb Hamilton and his wife Aubrey; eight great-grandchildren, Saylah, Kirby, Charleigh, Parker, Eleanor, William and twins Brynn and Raleigh. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Melvin, Edward and Harold; a sister Betty Kaufman.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the Sauder Center in Madison. Burial will follow services at Blakely Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at the VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Madison American Legion Post or Main Street Mamas (A Madison Community Development Program) and sent in care of the VanArsdale Funeral Home.
