Leo H. Schankie, 89, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia. He was born April 7, 1926 in Gridley, Kansas the son of Gustav and Mary Meyer Schankie. ��Leo attended a rural grade school near Gridley. As a young man Leo helped his father with custom cattle work throughout southern Coffey County. Leo entered the United States Army on September 19, 1944 and proudly served in the Philippines until his honorable discharge on November 2, 1946. In the next few years he operated a trucking business with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. Leo was joined in marriage to Geraldine "Jean" Sutton on October 30, 1946 in Emporia, Kansas. They cherished 46 years together until Jean preceded him in death on April 10, 1993. ��Leo started in the oil business as a rig hand for W.B. Miller in 1948 and a year later he went to work for Mid Continent Oil Company. In 1965,Leo bought his first pulling unit and began Schankie Well Service. In 1970 his two oldest sons, Wallace and Clifford joined their dad in the business. They bought their first oil lease in 1972 and subsequently drilled their first well in 1973. Leo's remaining three sons, Randall, Charles and Philip joined the company upon graduating high school in the 1970's. Leo will forever remain in the hearts and lives of his sons, Wallace, Clifford, Randalland wife Kristi, Charles and wife Pamela and Philip and wife Kelle all of who chose to make their homes in Madison; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents and three sisters, Anna Wood, Lena Horton and Thelma Decker.��
