John Andrew Small

John Andrew Small, 76, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 at his home in Lebo. ��He was born on January 31, 1939 on the family farm in the Arvonia Township of Osage County, the son of Clarence John and Nola Birdine Hodges Small. ��John was raised along the Marais des Cygnes River near Arvonia. He attended Reading High School, graduating with the Class of 1957. ��John joined the United States Army Reserve and went off to basic training in June of 1957. ��On September 15, 1957 John was joined in marriage to Frances Irene Edwards at Grace Methodist Church in Emporia. The young couple lived the early years of their marriage in Emporia where John worked at Crawford Furniture laying carpet. He continued to work there until 1975. ��In 1970 John and his family moved to Lebo. He farmed and raised cattle full time and eventually part time in Osage and Coffey Counties for 40 years. ��He will remain in the hearts of his wife, Frances of their home; daughter, Mary Lochmann and husband Larry of Lebo; sons, J. Michael Small and wife Kimala of Bates City, Missouri, Harold A. Small and wife Tracey of Lebo and Matthew J. Small and wife Piriya of Saudi Arabia; sisters, Frances Birdene Small of Eugene, Oregon, Lorene Marie Frazell of Colwich and Carol Ann Lebbin and husband Dennis of Towanda; brother, David Robert Small and wife Fran of Poinciana, Florida; sister-in-law, Betty Small of Lebo; fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald E. Small. ��Services will be held at 2:00 PM., Monday, November 9, 2015 at the Lebo United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM., until 6:00 PM., Sunday evening at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home in Lebo. Cremation will follow services with inurnment at Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo at a later date. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Lebo United Methodist Church, Hand In Hand Hospice or the Multiple Sclerosis Society and sent in care of the funeral home.
