Jenel L. Harper

January 8, 1935 — July 25, 2014

Jenel L. Harper, 79, of Lebo, Kansas passed away late Friday, July 25, 2014 at Sunset Manor in Waverly. Jenel LaLanne Harper was born on January 8, 1935 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the youngest child of Clarence E. and Josephine Ash LaLanne. She attended Lagrange High School in Lake Charles and graduated in 1952. Jenel was introduced to Leonard Harper during the time he was stationed at the Air Force Base in Lake Charles. They were married a few months later on July 1, 1953. They began their family and lived in Lake Charles for the next 15 years. In 1968 the family moved to Kansas. A devoted wife, loving mother and Ma, Jenel took delight in serving her family. She enjoyed gatherings at the homeplace where she prepared delicious meals, often Cajun specialties, for her growing family. If not preparing meals she was playing with the grandchildren. Most gatherings included family members and friends playing bluegrass music. Jenel accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior as a young girl and served Him faithfully throughout her life. As a member of the Lebo Baptist Church she taught children's Sunday school classes for many years, was Vacation Bible School coordinator and served in American Baptist Women. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Leonard M. Harper of their home; two daughters, Linnie Knight and husband Gary of Lebo and Connie D'Aubin and husband Stan of Bentonville, Arkansas; a son, John Harper and wife Misty of Atchison, Kansas; twelve grandchildren, Amanda Durst (Ryan), Layne Knight (Rachel), Nathan Knight (Rebecca), Claire and Grant D'Aubin, Samuel, Elisabeth, Anna, Malachi, Elias, Rose and Adam Harper; eight great-grandchildren, Audrey, Isaac, Caleb and Jesse Durst, Susanna, Garrison and Nellie Knight, and Reed Knight. Jenel was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Maydell LaLanne; two brothers, Iler "Chook" and Donnie LaLanne.
