Emma Behrens, 91, passed away late Sunday evening at the Flint Hills Care Center in Emporia. She was born July 22, 1923 in Alta Vista, Kansas the daughter of Edward and Anna Ash Neumeyer. As a young lady Emma worked as a switchboard operator for the Chalk Central Telephone Office. Emma was joined in marriage to Frank Behrens in 1943. The young couple lived on the family farm north of Chalk. Emma operated the Lake Cafe at Lake Wabaunsee during the mid 1960's. She was involved in a local Chalk community quilting group and developed a love for quilting that would continue for many years. Emma worked at Dolly Madison in Emporia during the late 1960's and the couple moved to Emporia in the early 1970's. Emma and Frank later divorced and he preceded her in death in April of 1994. She provided in home health care for the elderly in Wabaunsee, Lyon and Shawnee counties for many years. She will remain in the hearts of her two children, a daughter, Merita Hart of Oswego, New York and a son, Kenny Behrens of Lebo; a sister, Vera Bross of Alta Vista, Kansas; five grandchildren, David, Kristie, Derrick, Clint and Lonnie; six great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Walker, Kaitlyn, Alissa, Chandler and Spencer. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jerry Behrens on November 28, 2000.
