Dona May "Mazie" Briggs

Dona May “Mazie” Briggs, 73, passed away early Sunday, October 20, 2019 at her home in Iola.  She was born May 11, 1946 in Eureka, Kansas the daughter of Cecil and Gladys Sherman Williams. Mazie attended Madison High School and graduated with the Class of 1964. On August 14, 1965 she married the love of her life, Anthony Dean Briggs at the Madison United Methodist Church. During the early years of their marriage Dona worked at the Registrar of Deeds Office in the Greenwood County Courthouse. Dona and Dean lived in Eureka before moving to a farm east of Madison in the late 1960’s.  In the early 1970’s they moved to Garden City, Kansas and Dona began work as a bookkeeper for W.W. Feeders. They lived briefly on site at her work until purchasing a home in town in 1973. She later worked as a nurse for Dr. Terry Hunsberger for over 25 years before her retirement. Dona and Dean moved to Iola in February of 2019 to be closer to family. Mazie will live on in the hearts of her husband Dean of their home in Iola; daughters, Lori Bybee and her significant other Scott McNutt of La Harpe, Kansas and Krista Hess-Klug and her husband Alan of Riley, Kansas; a sister, Janice Horton and her husband Dallas of Emporia, Kansas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Glenn “Ronnie” Williams.  Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Madison United Methodist Church. Burial will follow services at Janesville Cemetery west of Hamilton. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday evening at the VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison.
