DELMAR W. HAFENSTEIN OSAGE CITY -- Delmar W. Hafenstein, 86, of Osage City, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Peterson Nursing Home in Osage City. Delmar Walter Hafenstein was born on January 8, 1929 in Alma, Kansas, the son of Julius A. and Amelia (Grunewald) Hafenstein. He grew up in Alma, Kansas started working for farmers at the age of 15. At age 17, he joined the United States Army for 3 years. He returned to Alma and worked at various jobs until taking a federal government job at Forbes Field loading cargo planes. Later he worked at Forbes Field in the supply depot until retiring at age of 49 after 29 years of service. In 1961, he moved the family to a farm east of Topeka and in 1973 moved to a farm in Osage City. Along with farming, he sold mason shoes and was a Dekalb dealer for 25 years. He married Margaret E. Aubert on June 2, 1951. She preceded him in death on July 3, 2010. Delmar will be remembered by his two daughters; Adella (Dave) Taylor of Topeka and Julie (Butch) Carlson of Osage City; four sons, Michael (Paulette) Hafenstein of Topeka, Dale (Diana) Hafenstein of Collinsville, Illinois, David (Kriste) Hafenstein of Osage City and Pat (Sandy) Hafenstein of Osage City; two sisters, Dorothy Hafenstein of Gladstone, Missouri and Connie Yonke of Alma; a brother, Donald Hafenstein of Alma; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Delmar was also preceded in death by a grandson, Conrad Carlson; three brothers, Julius, Jr., Leo, Alvin; five sisters, Hazel, Helen, Jean, Faye and Ida. He was a member of the American Legion Post 198. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church in Osage City. Military inurnment to follow service at Osage City Cemetery in Osage City. Family will receive friends after service at church. Memorials can be made to the Osage County 4-H or Conrad Carlson Charitable Foundation and sent in care of VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, Kansas 66523.
