Catherine Ann Newkirk

Catherine ‘Cathy’ Ann (Slagel) Newkirk, 63, lifelong resident of LeRoy, KS passed away early on January 9, 2022 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. Cathy was born on June 5, 1958 in Iola, KS to Raymond and Lois (Richards) Slagel. She attended grades K-12 in LeRoy, KS, graduating from LeRoy High School in 1976.
The best way to describe Cathy was “Mom”. Not only was she there for her children, but she was also considered a second mom by countless kids in the community and beyond. She loved baking and trying new recipes (especially new cakes). No holiday was complete without her pecan and pumpkin pies, and she always made sure there were extras for her kids to take home. She made sure to let you know how much you were loved. Cards from Cathy were always recognizable by the way she underlined all the ‘important parts’ that made her think of you.
Her loving memory lives on in the hearts of her husband, Randy Newkirk of LeRoy, KS; son, Newell Newkirk (Whitney) of Burlington, KS; daughters, Samantha Harmon of Manhattan, KS and Veronica Burner (Jacob) of LeRoy, KS; and one granddaughter, who was her whole world, Melody Burner; and countless close family members, friends, and others who called her ‘Mom’.
